This issue commemorates Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition reaching the South Pole on December 14, 1911 — beating Robert Falcon Scott's British team by 34 days. Scott's party perished on the return journey. Niue, a self-governing island in free association with New Zealand, has issued commemorative silver coinage under its own name since the 1980s, largely as a revenue-generating exercise through licensed numismatic programs rather than domestic circulation.
