The Solomon Islands has operated an aggressive commemorative program since the 1990s, licensing themed issues to European minting houses — this Pinocchio piece is typical of that arrangement, produced almost certainly by a private mint for the collector market rather than any domestic monetary purpose. The original Carlo Collodi story, published serially in an Italian newspaper beginning in 1881, was considerably darker than the Disney adaptation most buyers associate with the subject.
