The thylacine — commonly called the Tasmanian tiger despite being neither feline nor exclusively Tasmanian — was declared extinct in 1986, fifty years after the last known specimen, Benjamin, died in the Hobart Zoo on 7 September 1936. That date is now observed in Australia as National Threatened Species Day. Genetic recovery programs at the University of Melbourne have attracted serious funding since the early 2020s, which explains the renewed commercial interest in thylacine-themed issues from this period.
The Solomon Islands has no biological or historical connection to the species. The issuing authority is effectively a licensing arrangement with a bullion program, and the .9999 fineness places this squarely in the collector-bullion market rather than any circulating series.
