Saint Panteleimon was a physician-martyr executed under Diocletian around 305 AD who became one of the most venerated healers in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. His cult spread particularly through Mount Athos monasteries, where the dominant Russian monastery has carried his name since the eleventh century. Niue's sovereign coin program has long served as a vehicle for Orthodox devotional issues aimed squarely at Russian and Eastern European collector markets — a commercial arrangement that has nothing to do with the island's 1,600 inhabitants.
