Obverse description The obverse features a gilt papal coat of arms of John Paul II prominently displayed in the centre of the field, comprising a quartered shield bearing a cross and the letter M beneath a papal tiara with crossed keys, all rendered in gold gilding. The silhouetted skyline of Vatican City extends across the lower portion of the field, with radiating lines emanating from behind the central device to fill the upper field. The Pope is depicted in his white papal vestments, his expression serene and dignified. The Latin legend SANCTUS IOANNES PAULUS II arches around the upper periphery of the coin in bold gilt lettering against a dark contrasting background, identifying the canonised pontiff.
