The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issued this piece as part of a broader numismatic program celebrating the history of illicit trade in the Caribbean — rum running in the region predates American Prohibition by centuries, rooted in the colonial-era molasses and sugar trade that funded both planters and pirates alike. During U.S. Prohibition (1920–1933), the Caribbean's established distilling infrastructure made it the primary supply corridor for bootleggers operating along the Atlantic seaboard.
The colourisation was applied post-strike, a technique increasingly used by ECCB issues targeting the collector market from the mid-2010s onward.
