The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank's collector series has leaned heavily into Caribbean maritime history, and the rum runner theme draws on a genuine regional tradition — small, fast vessels that moved untaxed spirits between islands to evade both colonial customs authorities and, later, U.S. Prohibition-era enforcement patrols operating in the northern Caribbean. The trade was rarely glamorous; most operators were subsistence smugglers navigating inter-island rivalries and corrupt port officials rather than the romanticized figures popular culture later constructed.
The ECCB issues coins on behalf of eight member territories, none of which maintained independent mints — this piece was produced by a contracted private facility.
