Additional information

Niue has long operated as one of the more prolific issuers of licensed pop-culture coinage, leveraging its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand to mint collector pieces under agreements with foreign rights holders. Prostokvashino — the Soviet animated series produced by Soyuzmultfilm beginning in 1978 — became a vehicle for this type of issue as nostalgia-driven demand from Russian-speaking collectors proved commercially reliable in the late 2000s. The characters originated in Eduard Uspensky's 1974 children's book.
