Niue has issued commemorative silver under its own name since the 1990s, operating as a Cook Islands-adjacent program that licenses cultural and architectural subjects for collector markets. The Ponte dei Sospiri — Venice's Bridge of Sighs — takes its name from the sighs of condemned prisoners crossing it from the Doge's Palace to the adjacent prison, a romantic etymology popularized largely by Byron's 1818 verse in Childe Harold.
The bridge was completed around 1600 under the direction of Antonio Contino.
