Niue has long operated as a licensing vehicle for novelty bullion, and this issue is no different — struck under a formal agreement between the New Zealand-dependent territory and a commercial mint, with Niue's legal tender status providing the denomination while contributing nothing in the way of monetary circulation. The coin never saw Niuean commerce and was never intended to.
Nyota Uhura, the USS Enterprise communications officer introduced in Star Trek's 1966 premiere, was among the first Black women in a non-servant role in American primetime television — a fact the coin's existence nods toward without stating.
