Obverse description Fourth-generation crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials IRB appear below the truncation. The legend ELIZABETH II is inscribed to the left of the effigy, NIUE at the top, and 2 DOLLARS to the right, all in raised Latin lettering against a finely engraved engine-turned guilloche background rendered in black rhodium. The date 2020 appears in the lower exergue. The overall dark antiqued finish imparts a dramatic, high-relief appearance to the portrait.

Reverse description Three meerkats (Suricata suricatta) depicted in high relief against a vivid full-color desert sunset scene, with a large solar disc and rolling sand dunes rendered in warm orange and amber hues using selective color application. Two meerkats stand upright in vigilant posture while a third crouches between them, all positioned on rocky foreground terrain. A small cartouche bearing the series inscription DESERT LIFE appears to the lower right of the composition. The legend .999 FINE SILVER 1 OZ is inscribed along the lower rim in raised Latin lettering against the black rhodium-treated field.

Additional information

Niue has operated as a prolific licensing hub for commemorative silver issues since the 1990s, contracting with the New Zealand Mint and others to produce themed collector coins under its sovereign authority — an arrangement that funds a small but meaningful share of the island's revenue given its population of roughly 1,500. The meerkat series falls squarely within this commercial collector market, with black rhodium selectively applied to create contrast on relief surfaces.

KM#3745 is one of dozens of wildlife-themed one-troy-ounce issues struck for Niue in this period, most with mintages capped to maintain aftermarket premiums.
