The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issued this piece as part of a commemorative program honoring English monarchs — an unusual choice for a currency authority whose member states had by 2003 been independent for decades. Edward III's selection reflects his centrality to the Hundred Years' War, which he launched in 1337 by claiming the French throne through his mother Isabella, a claim that reshaped the English monarchy's self-conception for over a century.
Gold-plated copper-nickel at this weight puts the piece firmly in collector-issue territory rather than anything approaching bullion intent. The ECCB produced numerous such issues in the early 2000s targeting the numismatic market rather than circulation.
