The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issued this piece as part of a commemorative program honoring English monarchs — an unusual choice for a currency authority whose member states had been independent since the 1970s and 1980s. Edward I is best remembered for his conquest of Wales, completed by 1283, and his sustained military campaigns against Scotland that earned him the epithet "Hammer of the Scots" on his tomb at Westminster Abbey.
The gold plating on copper-nickel was standard for this ECCB commemorative run, which prioritized visual appeal over precious metal content.
