The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin was deliberately left in its bombed-out state after World War II — a decision made in the 1950s over considerable public controversy — and the ruined spire now stands alongside a modernist octagonal extension completed in 1963 by Egon Eiermann. The pairing of ruin and reconstruction was itself a political statement about West German memory and reconciliation.
