Cook Islands has issued commemorative silver under licensing agreements with manga and anime properties since the 2010s, and this piece falls within a series honoring Ashita no Joe — the 1968 Tetsuya Chiba and Asao Takamori manga that remains one of the most culturally significant boxing stories in Japanese history. The Joe Yabuki versus Tōru Rikiishi bout is the series' emotional axis: Rikiishi dies from complications after cutting weight to meet Joe in a lower class, a plot point that reportedly prompted real public mourning in Japan upon its publication.
