Niue's legal tender coinage has long functioned as a vehicle for the New Zealand-administered territory's primary revenue stream outside of fishing licenses — the island's population hovers around 1,500, making a domestic circulating economy essentially nonexistent. Coins issued under Niue's authority are struck almost exclusively for the international collector market, with production typically contracted to the Perth Mint or Central European minting houses.
