The Formosan golden hen — more accurately a color form of the Taiwan blue pheasant, Lophura swinhoii — was named after Robert Swinhoe, the British consul at Formosa who first described the species scientifically in 1862. Cook Islands' early 2000s wildlife series leaned heavily on endangered and regionally significant Asian fauna, a strategy that made the islands one of the most prolific commemorative issuers of that decade despite having no direct biological connection to the subjects depicted.
