The claim that Bruges hosted the world's first stock exchange rests on the gatherings of merchants at the inn of the Van der Beurse family in the late 13th and early 14th centuries — the family name itself giving rise to the word "beurs," and eventually "bourse," still the term for stock exchanges across continental Europe. Whether it constituted a true exchange in the modern sense is debated, but Bruges' role as the dominant trading hub of northwestern Europe in that period is not.
