| Reverse description | A richly detailed and gilt composition depicting the Dormition of the Mother of God in the Byzantine iconographic tradition. At the center, a rectangular icon panel rendered in gold plating and selective color shows the Virgin Mary lying on a bier surrounded by the Apostles, with Christ standing behind holding her soul represented as an infant in white; the panel border is ornamented with floral motifs and inset colored stones. Flanking the central icon are two large standing archangels with outstretched wings, their nimbi rendered in silver relief. Above, in the celestial register, God the Father appears in glory with arms extended, accompanied by a dove representing the Holy Spirit, clouds, and a scattering of six-pointed stars across the gilded field. The entire composition is enclosed by concentric bands of guilloche ornament and radiating sun-ray patterning along the outer border. |
