Brimstone Hill Fortress on St. Kitts was built largely by enslaved Africans under British military direction between the 1690s and 1790s, and withstood a notable siege by French forces under the Marquis de Bouillé in 1782 — the garrison surrendering after a month under overwhelming numbers. Britain recovered the fortress just a year later under the Treaty of Paris. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, one of the best-preserved colonial-era fortifications in the Americas.
