This piece belongs to the wave of large-format brass issues that Niue licensed through private mints in the 2010s, almost none of which circulated. The Hardangerfjord bridal procession is a specifically Norwegian tradition — the "Brudeferd i Hardanger" — immortalized by Adolph Tidemand and Hans Gude in their 1848 collaborative painting, itself one of the most reproduced images in Norwegian cultural history.
Niue's authority to issue collectible coinage under its own name derives from its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand, a relationship formalized in 1974.
