The 2011 coloured "Boreal Forest" toonie was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's first foray into applying colour to a circulation-format bimetallic coin — a technically demanding process given the two-metal construction and the need for the colouring to survive handling. Most examples in circulation lost their colour rapidly, making well-preserved coloured specimens genuinely scarcer than their mintage figures suggest.
