Cook Islands has operated a prolific commemorative program since the 1970s, issuing coins largely for the collector market rather than domestic circulation — the islands' actual transactional currency is the New Zealand dollar. This piece was struck to capitalize on the April 2013 announcement that the Duchess of Cambridge was expecting, a category of royal-event bullion that Cook Islands and a handful of Pacific-mandate mints have reliably produced for decades.
