Perth Mint's "Alien" release sits within a broader run of licensed pop-culture issues that the mint began aggressively pursuing in the 2010s as bullion demand softened and collector premiums became a more reliable revenue stream. This particular piece marks four decades since Ridley Scott's 1979 film entered production under 20th Century Fox — a project so notoriously over-budget and secretive during filming at Shepperton Studios that cast members were allegedly not shown H.R. Giger's creature designs until they encountered them on set.
