The Perth Mint's lunar series has run continuously since 1996, cycling through the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and resetting with a second series in 2008 and a third in 2020 — making this Ox issue the second year of that third cycle. The coins are legal tender of Tuvalu, a sovereign arrangement the Perth Mint has used for bullion issues since the Australian legal tender framework limits such flexibility domestically.
The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was adopted by Australian mints later than most Commonwealth issuers, appearing on Perth Mint bullion only from 2019 onward.
