The 2022 Commonwealth Games were held in Birmingham, England — the first time since 1986 that the Games returned to the United Kingdom, and the first Games ever to award more medal events in women's sport than men's. The pad-printing technique used on this circulating commemorative allows the Royal Australian Mint to apply color directly onto the coin surface without the cost of a dedicated proof or collector issue, a method the RAM has refined since the mid-2000s into one of the more technically consistent in the world.
