The Wiggles formed in Sydney in 1991, initially as a side project by members of children's band The Cockroaches. By 2021, the group had become one of Australia's most commercially successful entertainment exports, with merchandise and licensing revenue that dwarfed most domestic recording artists. Henry the Octopus — one of the original "friends" characters introduced in the early 1990s — was given his own circulating commemorative here, a distinction few fictional cephalopods can claim. The pad-printed colour application is applied post-strike, a process the Royal Australian Mint has used selectively since the early 2000s to add detail that dies alone cannot achieve.
