The Wiggles — formed in Sydney in 1991 by a group of early childhood education graduates — became one of the most commercially successful children's entertainment franchises in Australian history, at one point outselling the Rolling Stones in domestic music markets. Captain Feathersword, the friendly pirate character introduced in the early years, was performed for decades by Paul Field. The Royal Australian Mint's decision to commemorate the group's 30th anniversary with a circulating $2 coin placed children's television in the same numismatic space usually reserved for monarchs and war memorials. The pad-printing process used to apply colour is subject to wear and makes fully intact examples harder to find in circulation grades.
