The Golden Eagle Nugget takes its name from the Welcome Stranger, the largest alluvial gold nugget ever found — unearthed in 1869 near Moliagul, Victoria, weighing 2,316 troy ounces before smelting. The Perth Mint has issued coins referencing this discovery periodically since the 1980s gold bullion program, though the high-relief treatment applied here is a more recent premium collector variant demanding significantly tighter die pressure and slower striking cycles than standard bullion production.
The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was adopted by the Royal Australian Mint in 2019 — Perth followed suit shortly after.
