The 2018 Commonwealth Games were held on the Gold Coast — the first time Australia had hosted since Brisbane in 1982, and only the second time Queensland had done so. The RAM issued a series of circulating commemoratives for the event, with pad printing used to apply colour directly onto the coin surface, a relatively recent technique in Australian coinage that allows for detail the alloy itself cannot carry.
