Borobi — a blue koala whose name derives from the Yugambeh word for koala — was selected as the mascot for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the first Games held in Australia since Melbourne 1956. The pad-printed colour application on circulating coinage was still a relatively novel technique for the Royal Australian Mint at this point, used here to render Borobi's distinctive blue coat directly onto the coin surface rather than through enamel inlay or cloisonné. These entered general circulation alongside a broader series of themed two-dollar pieces issued throughout the lead-up to April 2018.
