Australia's standard $2 coin was modified for these releases with a pad-printed coloured rosemary sprig — a plant carried by mourners at Anzac Day ceremonies since the Gallipoli campaign, where rosemary grew wild on the peninsula. The Royal Australian Mint introduced coloured circulating coins partly to test pad-printing durability under everyday handling conditions, meaning these pieces doubled as both commemorative issues and a quiet manufacturing experiment.
The colour wears noticeably with circulation, making uncirculated examples significantly more visually distinct from worn ones than any standard strike would be.
