The Royal Australian Mint introduced coloured circulating coinage with this issue, applying a red pad-printed poppy to standard $2 blanks — a first for Australian currency. The technique presented real durability concerns for a coin intended for general circulation, and in practice the colour degrades noticeably with use, making unworn examples increasingly difficult to find outside collector channels.
The poppy motif connects to Australia's long tradition of Remembrance Day observance, rooted in the Western Front casualties of 1914–18. Over the seven-year release window, multiple batches were distributed, primarily through Australia Post and Returned Services League channels rather than standard bank rolls.
