Additional information

The "In Flanders Fields" $2 was issued to mark the centenary of the First World War, a commemorative program the Royal Australian Mint ran across multiple years. The pad-printing process — applied directly onto the coin's surface in the field — was a relatively new technique for Australian circulation coinage at the time, and early examples shed their colour with handling, making uncirculated survivors considerably more visually intact than anything that spent time in a pocket.

John McCrae wrote the poem in May 1915, days after the Second Battle of Ypres claimed a close friend.
