Reverse description The reverse presents a faithful reproduction of Thomas Brock's celebrated Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria, depicting the aged monarch in right-facing profile wearing a widow's veil and small crown, with pearl drop earring and elaborate necklace visible at the truncation. The finely engraved bust is surrounded by a beaded inner border. The circumferential legend, separated by raised dots, reads VICTORIA·DEI·GRA·BRITT·REGINA·FID·DEF·IND·IMP, with the engraver's initials T.B. appearing in the lower field. The design closely replicates the reverse treatment used on Victorian-era British coinage of the 1890s.

Additional information

This piece belongs to a collector set issued by the Royal Australian Mint at the turn of the millennium, grouping monarchs who reigned during the twentieth century rather than celebrating any single event or political moment. The conceit was straightforward: Australia had been under five different monarchs between Federation in 1901 and the year 2000, and the set acknowledged that sweep of royal continuity in a single release.

KM#500 is the Elizabeth II entry in that grouping — her fourth portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which had only been adopted by Australian coinage in 1999, making this one of its earliest appearances on a commemorative silver issue.
