The Australian Kookaburra series launched in 1990 as one of the Perth Mint's early forays into the bullion coin market, competing directly with the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Silver Eagle for collector and investor attention. The 2-troy-ounce format — which this piece represents — was introduced to offer a higher-silver-content option within the series alongside the standard 1 oz issue.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, adopted across Australian coinage from 1999, appears here in its first full year of use on the Kookaburra series.
