Australia's decimal currency system launched on 14 February 1966 — "Decimal Currency Day" — replacing the pound with the dollar at a rate of two dollars to one pound. The conversion required one of the largest public education campaigns in Australian history, including a jingle ("In come the dollars and in come the cents") that many Australians of a certain age still remember involuntarily. This commemorative issue marks fifty years from that changeover.
The aluminium bronze alloy used here is identical to the standard circulation $2 coin introduced in 1988, which itself replaced a paper note withdrawn partly due to short service life in the Australian climate.
