Issued to mark Australia's participation in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, this is one of several coloured circulating two-dollar coins released by the Royal Australian Mint that year — each in a different team colour. The pad-printing process, applied directly to the aluminium bronze planchet, was the same technology the RAM had been refining since its coloured ANZAC commemoratives, but applying it to a coin intended for general circulation at face value was still an uncommon approach globally.
Yellow designated the support team livery. Most examples found today show edge and contact marks consistent with actual teller-tray handling rather than deliberate saving.
