Solomon Islands marked forty years of independence from Britain in 2018 — a sovereignty gained on 7 July 1978, making this one of the Pacific's later decolonizations. The islands had been administered under a joint British-Australian condominium arrangement for much of the twentieth century, with wartime disruption during 1942–43 leaving a complex postcolonial administrative legacy that delayed the independence process considerably longer than neighboring territories.
