The Kookaburra bullion series launched in 1990 as Perth Mint's answer to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle — a direct commercial play for the international silver bullion market. Each annual issue features a different kookaburra design, which drives collector demand well beyond the coin's intrinsic silver value and distinguishes it from purely utilitarian bullion programs. The 1992 two-ounce piece is the larger of two sizes struck that year.
Elizabeth II's third portrait, sculpted by Raphael Maklouf, appeared on Australian coinage from 1985 until its replacement by Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy in 1999.
