Obverse description Oval intaglio portrait vignette of the Marchioness of Lansdowne at left and the Marquess of Lansdowne at right, with a large green guilloche underprint bearing the word TWO DOLLARS in the centre. The serial number appears twice in the upper centre field, with the date OTTAWA, JULY 2ND, 1887 inscribed below the central vignette. Two manuscript signatures appear at lower centre, with the printer's imprint at the bottom margin.
Obverse lettering DOMINION OF CANADA WILL PAY TO BEARER TWO DOLLARS OTTAWA, JULY 2ND, 1887
Reverse description Central intaglio vignette of Christopher Columbus sighting land, rendered in a classical engraving style with figures on the prow of a ship. Two large ornate guilloche rosettes bearing the numeral 2 are positioned at left and right of the central scene. The overall design is printed in green, with intricate lathe-work borders framing the entire composition.
