The Dominion of Canada issued its own currency directly through the federal Department of Finance rather than through a chartered bank — a deliberate assertion of central government control over paper money during a period when private bank notes still dominated everyday commerce. This 2 Dollar note belongs to the 1878 series, one of the earliest Dominion issues, printed by the British American Bank Note Company in Montreal, which had only been incorporated in 1866 from the merger of two earlier engraving firms.
The denomination itself is notable. The 2 Dollar value was quietly discontinued in later Dominion series, making the 1878 issue one of the few federal Canadian notes ever struck at this amount.
