Additional information

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa was established in 2000, when remains exhumed from a World War I burial site at Cabaret-Rouge, France were repatriated and interred beneath the National War Memorial. Canada was notably late among Commonwealth nations in creating such a monument — Britain dedicated theirs in 1920, Australia in 1993. This toonie marks one of the first circulation-format coins issued under Charles III for the Canadian domestic market, following the transition in obverse portraiture after Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
