When Hugh Capet was elected king in 987, Charles refused to accept the dynasty's displacement and seized Laon in 988. He held it for two years before being betrayed by Bishop Adalberon of Laon, captured through treachery during negotiations, and imprisoned at Orléans, where he died without ever regaining his freedom.
