Charles III "The Devil" (Karel III) was Duke of Lower Lorraine from 977 until his death in captivity around 993, the last Carolingian claimant to the West Frankish throne. When Hugh Capet was elected king in 987, Charles refused to accept the dynasty's displacement and seized Laon in 988. He held it for two years before being betrayed by Bishop Adalberon of Laon, captured through treachery during negotiations, and imprisoned at Orléans, where he died without ever regaining his freedom.
Niue's use of the epithet "The Devil" reflects his reputation among Capetian chroniclers, who had every incentive to blacken his name.
