Niue has long served as a licensing vehicle for the New Zealand Mint's more experimental collector programs, and this piece belongs to a Tetris-branded series issued under that arrangement. The underlying licensing deal between The Tetris Company and various mints has produced a range of interlocking coin formats since the early 2020s, with the Tetrimino shape — a physical departure from round or rectangular flans — being the central gimmick of the program.
Charles III's effigy appears here for the first time in this series following the September 2022 accession, replacing Elizabeth II on the obverse authority side of subsequent releases.
