| Obverse description | The reverse face of the coin reproduces, in high relief with a silk finish, the famous golden plaque carried aboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. At centre-right, finely modelled three-dimensional effigies of a nude man and woman stand before a silhouette of the Pioneer spacecraft rendered to scale; the man raises his right hand in greeting. To the left, an engraved starburst pulsar map radiates fourteen lines annotated in binary notation indicating the Sun's position relative to known pulsars. The upper field displays the hyperfine transition diagram of the hydrogen atom, while the lower register depicts the solar system with a trajectory line indicating the spacecraft's path from the third planet. The field is otherwise plain, with no legends, the entire composition faithfully replicating the original NASA plaque design by Carl Sagan and Frank Drake. |
