Niue has operated a licensing-based bullion and collector coin program since the 1990s, contracting with external minting houses — primarily the New Zealand Mint — to produce legal tender issues bearing Disney, Star Wars, and other intellectual property. The arrangement grants Niue nominal issuing authority while the commercial and creative decisions sit entirely with the licensee.
Charles III's effigy appears here in his first full year as coinage sovereign following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, making 2023 the transitional year in which most Commonwealth-adjacent issuers updated their obverse dies.
