Niue has operated as a prolific licensing hub for themed bullion and collector issues since the 1990s, its status as a New Zealand realm territory giving it the legal standing to issue currency bearing the British monarch's effigy. "Exodia" refers to the forbidden monster from the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, introduced by Konami in 1996 — assembling all five pieces in the card game results in an automatic win, a mechanic that made the character iconic among collectors long before coin series latched onto the concept.
