Niue has operated as a prolific bullion and commemorative licensing hub since the 1990s, issuing coins under New Zealand's monetary umbrella while contracting production almost entirely to external mints — in this case almost certainly the New Zealand Mint in Auckland, which holds a long-running exclusive arrangement with the Niue government for themed silver issues. The Christmas Carol series draws on the 1843 Dickens novella, published at a moment when the modern English Christmas was itself being actively reinvented.
First serialized response to the story was immediate and outsized — six thousand copies sold on publication day.
